The
historic
Miaoulis
square
is
the
cultural
hub
of
the
island.
Miaouli
square
is
the
historic
square
of
Syros
featuring
architectural
marvels
that
blend
into
a
dreamy
landscape
of
the
19th
century
with
buildings
that
testify
the
existence
of
a
great
civilization.
It
is
worth
visiting
the
Town
Hall
inspired
from
Ziller
that
has
been
giving
a
special
character
to
the
area
since
1898
with
its
impressive
staircase
of
15.5
meters
width,
the
club
that
houses
the
cultural
center
since
1863
and
the
historical
archives
of
Syros
in
a
building
situated
next
to
the
Town
Hall.
Of
course
the
square
also
features
the
statue
of
the
admiral
from
the
war
of
independence
Andreas
Miaoulis.
After
several
other
names
that
preceded
such
as
square
Othonos
and
Leotsakou
the
square
was
finally
named
in
honor
of
the
admiral.

with
embossed
drawings
of
Apollo
and

muses
transformed
the
space
into
the

Archive
of
the
Cyclades
welcomes
visitors

familiarize

the
martial

cultural
history

island
through
scripts
from
different
eras.
The
Historical
Archive
of
the
Cyclades
is
housed
in
the
marble
Ladopoulos
mansion,
next
to
the
Town
Hall
on
Miaouli
square
and
houses
a
wealth
of
administrative,
technical
and
economical
archives
from
the
Prefecture
of
the
Cyclades
dating
back
to
1821,
except
from
archives
related
to
Naxos.

files,
documents
and
register
are
available
to
the
public
from
Monday
to

The
cultural
center
of
Syros
adorns
the
city
with
its
impressive architecture and cultural identity.
The
Cultural
Center
of
Ermoupolis
was
built
in
1863
under
the
supervision
of
the
Italian
architect
Pietro
Sampo.
Its
monumental
appearance
stands
out
for
the
marble
parapet,
the
balcony,
the
walls,
the
toscanic
columns,
the
stone
pitching
with
the
filled
joints
and
the
cornices.
The
building
was
initially
under
the
rule
of
the
Italians
and
was
soon
bombed,
suffering
many
damages.
By
1970
the
building
was
home
of
the
Hellas
Club
and
soon
it
began
to
house
the
Cultural
Center
of
Ermoupolis
which
organized
various
kinds
of
events
until
1998
when
it
was
renovated
and
began
to
also
house
the
Convention
Center.
The
mural
decor
was
badly
damaged
and
was
later
restored
by
the
painter
Anna Vasilakis.

With
a
long
tradition
in
the
construction
and
repairs
of
vessels
and
merchant
ships
the
Shipyard
of
Syros
still
applies
the
traditional
art
of
wooden
shipbuilding
even
to the day.
Interwoven
to
the
island’s
maritime
tradition,
the
Shipyard
or
Boatyard
first
appeared
in
the
mid-19th
century
to
the
south
of
the
harbor,
adjacent
to
the
island’s
large
dockyard
“Neorio”
due
to
the
smooth
slope
of
the
terrain
which
allowed
the
hauling
and
launching
of
small
boats
and
larger
over
the
years.
Greece
always
had
an
advantage
due
to
its
geographical
location
as
a
hub
of
the
three
large
seas
thus
featuring
an
abundance
of
shipyards
including
that
of
Syros
which
was
a
freight
traffic
harbor
also
working
as
a
ship
repair
unit.
Until
today
both
the
Boatyard
of
Mavrikos
and
George’s
careening
area
as
known
from
the
very
old
times
continue
the
long
shipbuilding
tradition
with
new
modernized
equipment.

The
municipal
library
of
Syros
is
the
gate
to
history,
knowledge and culture.
The
first
book
collection
began
in
1926
with
2000
volumes
from
the
library
of
the
Gymnasium
of
Ermoupolis,
the
library
of
j.
Rota
and
Bishop
of
the
Cyclades
Anthimos
Komninos
as
well
as
thousands
of
titles
donated
by
the
poet,
lyricist
and
writer
Manos
Eleftheriou.
A
collection
that
has
reached
approximately
45,000
volumes
including
the
books
Argonautica
of
1521,
Onomastikon
of
Polydeykous
of
1608,
Ioustinianai
and
collections
from
the
press
of
Syros
from
the
previous
century.
The
library
is
housed
on
the
ground
floor
of
a
beautiful
neoclassical
building
of
1863
on
Miaouli
square
which
also
hosts
the
cultural
center
of
Ermoupolis.
In
the
area
of
the
public
library
various
cultural
events
worth
attending
are
organized.
The
busts
of
Emanuel
Roidis,
Georgios
Souris,
Ritas
Mpoumi-Pappa,
Dimitris
Vikelas
and
Timoleon
Ambelas
adorn
the
small
garden
in
front
of
the

Villa Tsiropina
The
City
Hall
Villa
of
Poseidonia
is
an
impressive
historic
conservation
building
that
reflects
the
timeless
splendor
of
the
aristocratic
area
of
Della
Grazia
at
Poseidonia area.
The
City
Hall
of
Poseidonia
in
Della
Grazia
is
a
historical
stone
building,
great
sample
of
the
summer
residence
of
aristocrats
during
the
20th
century
that
reflects
the
glamour
of
a
bygone
era.
Project
of
the
Tsiropina
brothers,
the
Villa
which
constitutes
the
City
Hall
was
constructed
in
1916
and
was
the
residence
of
Konstantinos
Tsiropinas,
Mayor
of
Ermoupoli
between
1887
and
1891
as
well
as
partner
of
E.
Saloustros
at
the first Tanning factory of Syros founded in 1829.
Villa
Tsiropina
is
a
true
artwork
curated
by
an
architect
from
Burgundy.
A
stunning
Villa
in
Poseidonia
with
reception
areas,
lounges,
dining
rooms,
fireplaces,
bedrooms,
storage
rooms,
kitchen
areas
and
unique
frescoes.
The
Villa
is
embraced
by
fragrant
gardens
and
some
auxiliary
buildings
that
were
mostly
used
for
the
parking
of
wagons
at
the
time.
In
1966
the
Villa
passes
to
the
hands
of
Mark
Daskos,
Mayor
of
Ano
Syros
and
in
2000
it
is
bought
by
the
Municipal
Authority
of
Poseidonia
and
used
as
an
exhibition
hall.
During
the
following
years
the
Villa
is
restored
and
begins
to
function
as
the
City
Hall
of
Poseidonia
and
as
a cultural hub.
Today,
Villa
Tsiropina
is
a
cultural
multi-space
that
houses
several
municipal
services
of
Syros-Ermoupoli
while
occasionally
hosting
exhibitions,
theatre
performances,
lectures,
conferences
and
other
cultural
events.

Pherecydes
was
created
to
honor
this
local
poet
and
philosopher
who
left
his
mark in world history.

philosopher

poet
Pherecydes
Bambyos
while
it
is
said
that
the
famous
philosopher
resided
in
a
cave
just
a
bit
after
the
village
of
Kyperoussa.
Pherecydes
is
world
renowned
for
his
work
Theogony
in
which
he
argues
that
the
gods
come
from
three
secular
elements,
Zanta,
Chrono
and
Chthonii
that
existed
in
the
universe.
He
is
also
known
for
the
most
ancient
solar
Observatory,
known
as
the
Sunflower
of
Pherecydes
that
was
found
in
the
village
San
Michalis,
a
monumental
structure
that
was
created
for
the
calculation
of
time
and
season
according
to
the
movement of the Sun.

Customs
office
of

could
be
regarded

the
historical and commercial center of the island.
When
arriving
to
the
island
of
Syros
the
first
thing
the
visitor
encounters
opposite
from
the
pier
of
the
port
of
Syros
is
the
Customs
office
that
is
built
by
the
sea.
This
is
a
monumental
two-story
marble
building
designed
by
Alexander
Georgantas
in
1860
which
stands
out
for
its
unique
aesthetic.
The
building
suffered
damages
from
the
bombings
of
WWII
and
therefore
was
completely
rebuilt
according
to
its
original
design.
The
merchant
ships
moor
at
the
waterfront
to
pass
the
customs
control
even
to
the
day.

building

houses
the
Picture
Gallery
of
the
Cyclades
created
in
1994.

to
the
customs
office

merchant

our
history
and

the
years,
the
degree
earned
from

school
began
to
be
recognized
